MPlayer is a free and open source media player. It was originally called "MPlayer - The Movie Player for Linux". As it is available for all major operating systems including Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, so later, developers are later shortened to "MPlayer - The Movie Player".
The MPlayer project was started because Arpi (the original author) was unable to find any satisfactory video players for Linux. The development was began in 2000, and the first MPlayer version is v0.01: http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/old_stuff/releases/MPlayer-0.01.tar.gz Already ten years, mplayer now is definitely a great media player!
